MIMETIC EXERCISES II, 2016

Mimetic Exercises II was made during a residency at David Diez Studio, where I was selected alongside Alejandría Cinque to reflect on the still-life from an experimental point of view. It is the continuation of a series of works made in collaboration where the traditional genres of painting become the subject matter of our practice, being the first one Mimetic Exercises I.

This time, we made a contemporary translation of a selection of paintings from the Prado Museum in Madrid that were chosen for their still-life and portraiture conjunction. By establishing a dialectical relationship between past images and contemporary codes –and using different objects and ourselves as models–, we transformed the symbols of death and the passage of time from the Vanitas into ironic, playful and absurd images that have the ghostly presence of an inherited culture and moral.
